Destination: Hawaii Age: 56-65
We sailed on the Diamond Princess to Hawaii.
The crise started in Los Angeles where we spent two nights before being taken to the ship.
As you would expect from a cruise line like Princess everything was extremely slick, the embarkation was fast and trouble free luggage arived without delay the ship was first class the food -- what can I say other than there were approximately 2000 Americans on board and I didn't hear any of them complaining about the quality of the food!!
The cruise itself going was fine 4 days at sea give you time to chill out before you hit the islands but it does become a bit of a bind on the return as you are counting down the days to the end of the cruise.
We went in April and those first two days out were cold on deck but once you hit the warmer waters then it is very very pleasant!!
Pearl harbour is a must see trip but in general we thought the trips weren't that exciting and as with most cruises they are pricy (best arrange your own when you arrive in port)
Prices on board were a little more expensive that other cruise lines but you do get the service which can't be faulted so much so that we have already booked another cruise with Princess!!

Were the shore excursions value for money or it is worth doing your own shore visits independantly?
ANSWER
Answer by dunne, liverpool (23 Oct 08 18:44) to a QUESTION by Holden (18 Oct 08 18:05)
The excusions aren't cheap, we did the pearl harbour trip through Princess but people who did it themselves found it much cheaper. On the other island trips we found that the local guides were excellent value, knowledgeable and friendly and much better than being herded about. All in all it is a magical cruise, as I said if you go early march/early April the first two days at sea are chilly then you hit the warm waters and there are whales and dolphins in abundance., paradise!! Hope this helps.
