Not so much a review as a money saving tip

Not a review but hopefully some information which will be helpful to anyone going on a Princess cruise. We are doing the Panama Canal over Christmas and have just received a booklet from Princess Cruises entitled Cruise Answer Book. Like many frequent travellers, we use a Nationwide credit card which does not attract any currency conversion charges and converts your spend into sterling using the Bank Rate (much better than the tourist rate). However, I came across the following in the Cruise Answer Book. "If you are paying by credit card and the card you are using is a Visa or Mastercard issued outside of the US which is not billed to you in US dollars, then the full amount of the onboard account will be converted by Princess Cruises to the currency of the card at a current exchange rate at the time the onboard account is charged to your credit card. The rate will include a 3% currency conversion service charge." It goes on to say "If you do not want your charges to be converted to the currency of your card by Princess Cruises, please ensure you tick the box on the Express Check-Out form which can be found in your cruise documentation." It is quite possible that some travellers will not have read all the small print, so I hope this may save them quite a lot of money. I shall certainly be "ticking the box".

Even when you have ticked the box I would recommend visiting the customer service desk to make sure that this is clearly marked on the computer system.

the way round this is to pay in cash the evening before disembarking preferably in dollars.

Yes, this is an important point. It is most unlikely that any cruise line will offer a better overall conversion rate (allowing for any 'commission') than one's own credit card - and certainly will not better a commission-free card such as Nationwide. It is the card-holder's RIGHT to insist on being billed in local currency when overseas and this type of 'option' notice is becoming common, almost certainly because of the many complaints to both Visa and Mastercard about foreign transactions generally (not specifically cruise charges).

Thanks for that. I been with Princess twice, my partner four times and I don't think we've spotted that one! I will be checking with him to make certain this is done in future - if not already. He holds the purse strings!

Thank you for that it is certainly worth knowing. I have literally just received my cruise answer book and have yet to read it.
