Grand Princess – The Largest Ship Ever to Visit Liverpool! On 11th June 2008, Liverpool witnessed the arrival of Grand Princess – the largest cruise ship to ever visit the city’s port. This was part of a twelve-day tour around the British Isles. Grand Princess carries 2,600 passengers, is 950 ft. long and weighs 109,000 tonnes. The ship would have felt very much at home in a city with such strong links with maritime history and culture. In many ways, Grand Princess is comparable to the glamorous, grand ocean liners built in Liverpool in the last century – yet it also reflects how cruising has changed in the past five decades. The cruise ship combines traditional aspects of cruising with an array of modern amenities such as the Lotus Spar and flexible dining options across ten restaurants. 1 2 Next»

Great for Liverpool to once more see the arrival of large cruise ships visiting its port but what a pity that the departure dock for Fred Olsen, Thomson etc. is such a 'dump' with no poroper reception area and sailing out via a giant scrap mountain of rusting objects. Its like the old saying fur coat and no knickers..... Not the fault of Olsen and Thomson but very much the fault of Liverpool Dock Authority and not a good adverisement for the city of Liverpool and the North West. Show you do care for passengers departing from Liverpool. Have the Harbour Authorities had a look at Newcastle? Small but clean and very efficient. A proper enquiry and departure lounge... Come on Liverpool get your act together.

The new cruise terminal overlooks our lovely buildings on the waterfront (stunning)this is where the Grand berthed--and didn't she look lovely.I can't wait till our cruise on her next year. The cheaper end of the cruise sector choose places like our Langton dock area because of cost,it's a working dock. This is why their cruises are cheaper (its not rocket science!!).Lots of people who we spoke to off the Grand loved our city --there was a buzz in the air when she visited recently,so please credit where it's due please.
I recently boarded the Sea Princess in Barbados the area was dissapointing but we realised this is a working dock area and not at all representative of the island.

You speak as though I do not know Liverpool. I know Liverpool very well, being born only a few miles further along the Mersey, also my mother was born in Wallasey. I know it is a great city - I never said it was not, my comments were pointed towards the docks USED by Thomson and Olsen. Perhaps you think that a couple of thousand for a weeks cruise is cheap but I can assure you there are many that do not. I was pointing out that they deserve better facilities at Langdon Dock so perhaps the companies concerned should do something about it. So. please don't take on about Liverpool having lovely buildings - I know it has and I also know the waterfront very well, please do not patronise me by quoting 'rocket sience' when I refer to the facilities offered by the cheaper cruise lines. You appear to be over sensitive or misunderstood my comments re Langton Dock - I hope you will now understand my comments were NOT about the City of Liverpool but about facilities.

How ridiculous is this - you are turning this into a personal 'vendetta' - i think you are being oversensitive not 'Dinning'. And just for the record I am not from Liverpool but i did come there on the Grand Princess in August and loved it.

Thomson and Fred Olsen my have less overheads by using Langdon Dock - but some of their prices are not so low!! Perhaps if Langdon Dock was tided up a bit and there was a proper reception area and the eyesore of the giant scrap yard was diminished, things might look smarter. I have sailed from Newcastle and Harwich and although on the small site the passenger boarding facilities were great. I still think Liverpool should get its act together or it will lose companies such as Fred Olsen and Thomson and this would be a great pity to people in the N.West who othewise found Liverpool an essy port to get to and sail from. How can they say it is The Capitol of Culture when presenting docks like Langdon. Its like fur coats and no-knickers...

I feel you are being very unfair to my city, which incidently is choca-block this weekend.99%+ will not be seeing the Langton Dock which admittedly is a scrap exporting area. Please let us know when you're visiting again I will arrange for our "fur coat" to be draped over said scrap metal.Also--never visit Tenerife (offensive old working port)Barbados,Jamaica, theAzores, etc,etc you will find them offensive as they're WORKING PORTS TOO!!!!!

My husband and I were invited to visit the Grand Princess on the visit to Liverpool on 11th June, 2008. We had a wonderful day out, everything was organised so well, from the free car parking, the welcome aboard, the champagne reception before a magnificent lunch. I wish other cruise lines would do a similar thing. I long for the days when we can travel to Liverpool and board the ship and sail away, maybe to the Caribbbean.

You can sail from Liverpool. Both Fred Olsen and Thomson sail cruise ships from the port. Unfortunately, they do not berth in the new dock used by the Grand Princess. They use a minor dock with very few facilities. BUT YOU CAN SAIL FROM LIVERPOOL, unfortunately not yet to the Caribbean, I too do remember the huge passenger liners that sailed from Liverpool, Cunard and remember the Empress of Canada - wonderful ship. I too look forward to the time when world class passenger liners return to our once famous Liverpool Port - not on a visit but to take-up passengers.
